Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in cannabis sativa and hemp plants that interact with the endocannabinoid system. The system maintains body balance by playing a major role in pain relief, mood regulation, digestion, and stress or anxiety reduction. The main form of CBD product is oil. It is readily available over the counter and in many pharmacists. What is CBD Oil?

Lall & S (2020) stated that CBD oil is derived from extracting CBD compounds from the cannabis plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil like hemp seed oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or sunflower oil. Compared to other CBD products, it appears relatively safe and well tolerated. The cannabis sativa plant contains a variety of compounds. The other most known chemical compound is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), an additive associated with the sensation of highness in its users. On the other hand, CBD is non-addictive, anti-inflammatory, and non-psychoactive. It has health benefits like mental, heart, pain relief, and potential benefits for patients with ADHD.

What is ADHD?

Ronald et al. (2021) explained that Attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder is a common mental disorder mostly affecting children. The condition is characterized by having trouble sitting still, inability to focus, forgetfulness, and being disorganized. Other than it common to kids, adults can be diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, over three-thirds of children with ADHD will continue with the condition symptoms as adults.

ADHD Symptoms, Types, and Causes

Patients diagnosed with the disorder differ in their symptoms. The commonly known signs are hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. These symptoms lead to significant suffering and cause problems most to children at home, school, or adults at work or in relationships. There are three types of this condition, namely;

  • Inattentive presentation- is associated with patients who have challenges staying focused on the task, being organized, paying close attention to details, listening properly, and not being easily distracted.
  • Hyperactive or impulsive presentation. It is characterized by excessive movements, such as not sitting still, being talkative, making rational decisions without thinking, and fidgeting.
  • Combined presentation. It is associated with patients who show both inattentive and hyperactive signs.

Much research has been conducted to discover the main cause of this disorder but has gone in vain. However, the latest research suggests that ADHD can be a genetic type of a disease passed from generation. In addition to genetics, scientists have shown the following may cause the disorder;

  • Low birth weight
  • Children who have been derived prematurely
  • Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy brain injuries
  • Exposure to environmental risks such as metals particles during pregnancy

How to Use CBD Oil in ADHD Management?

Hergenrather et al. (2020) noted that the Food and Drug Administration {FDA) has approved oil as one form of CBD product to be prescribed as medication for treating ADHD. Unlike other forms such as pills or capsules, CBD oil contains little or no chemicals to manufacture it. It is pure and mixed with organic materials such as hemp seed oil. There are health experts ways to use the oil effectively in treating the disorder, namely,

  • Taking with beverages or food: to avoid the oily flavor, patients are advised to take the medication together with beverages.
  • The CBD oil can be in the form of a frozen solid, which is placed under the tongue and then swallowed. It is the most effective since the body easily digests the product.

It is usually advisable well treat ADHD to start with a small amount of CBD oil per day and gradually increase the dosage over time. Most health centers suggest one start with 10-20 mg of CBD in the oil.

Benefits of CBD Oil in ADHD Treatment

Mansell et al. (2022) highlighted the following benefits of CBD oil to ADHD patients:

CBD Reduces Hyperactivity

CBD is known for reducing anxiety in people. People who have a problem staying still are characterized by having excessive worrisome to little problems, thus making rational decisions. At the same time, children with ADHD are characterized by insufficient production of endocannabinoids used to regulate mood and thus reduce anxiety. Taking CBD oil increases the number of these compounds, helping the Endocannabinoid system perform its functions.

In addition, research shows a patient with hyperactivity syndrome tend to use marijuana for relaxation, believing it relieves the symptom. Marijuana is a cannabis species that contain a high level of THC. Therefore, CBD products can also do the relaxation properties for users.

Regulating the Immune System

Uncontrolled ADHD can lead to other complications such as nervous system failure and even reduction of the immune system. CBD oil help in preventing these complications due to its anti-inflammatory properties and reduced seizures. Boosting the immune system also aids in treating ADHD with other medications. Drugs prescribed by doctors to treat the disorders are more effective when taken together with CBD oil due to their ability to regulate the body immune in handling the medication.

Relieving Pain to ADHD Patients

Most adults with the condition often report skeletal muscle pain and some other physical discomfort. If not cared for, it can even lead to respiration problems. The human body contains a special system to help regulate pain called the Endocannabinoid system. It reduces pain by boosting the body to produce endocannabinoids. They bind to body receptors in the nervous system to maintain interior body balance. CBD helps in relieving pain by affecting interactions between endocannabinoids and receptors, reducing inflammation, and increasing the production of the body's cannabinoid compounds.

Improving Attention in Children

CBD oil can improve mental conditions. It interferes with the brain's part responsible for concentration and thoughts. CBD combines with brain receptors and helps block sad or disturbing thoughts in ADHD children, thus increasing the level of concentration.
