CBD oil can help in promoting homeostasis in the body. It may be possible through the different ways that CBD and the endocannabinoid system interact. It can also be through homeostasis and the endocannabinoid system.

CBD is known to work on the body by making sure that the endocannabinoid breakdown is slowed down. When this happens, the body is put into a position to use the compounds more efficiently. This limits risks such as inflammation in the nervous and immune systems. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for the regulation of the functions of the body. Since CBD may find it hard to bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, they interact with the other receptors like serotonin and dopamine, thus assisting in regulating body functions. The different ways in which CBD oil assists in promoting homeostasis are discussed below in this article.

What Is CBD

CBD is an active and organic compound found in the cannabis plant. It does not have the presence of THC compound. This means it cannot cause a high effect as it is a psychotropic compound.

Types of CBD

CBD exists in three different forms. They include;

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD has all the compounds that are found in the cannabis plant. It is for this reason why at times, it is referred to as whole-plant cannabis. It also has the THC compound with a percentage of 0.3. However, the presence of THC compound does not mean that it can cause a high effect except when taken in high amounts.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is at times seen to be similar to full-spectrum CBD. However, they are not the same. Broad-spectrum CBD has almost all the compounds found in the cannabis plant except the THC compound. However, some small traces of THC can be found in it but not that much to have an effect.

Isolate-Based CBD

CBD isolate is always in pure form. It goes through several processes to ensure that all the compounds found in the cannabis plant are removed. This makes it the least active form of CBD as no compound works together to get through its effects.


The body needs to balance to function properly. Rahal et al. (2014) stated that homeostasis refers to the ability of the body to maintain balance even when stress is evident. When it is cold or hot, the body sends signals, which is how one can perceive the temperature and know how to wear it. These signals are what show that the body is normally functioning.

Abbaspour et al. (2014) reported that when the body lacks homeostasis, it will be difficult to prevent damage and overcome some of the challenges that the body may get. This is why sometimes inflammation may occur in the body. Inflammation is caused when harmful substances come into contact with the body's healthy cells. However, when there is balance in the body, it is possible to avoid the risk of inflammation in the body.

The Endocannabinoid System and Homeostasis

The body has the presence of the endocannabinoid system that is centrally placed. This system has cannabinoid receptors that are found in every part of the body. Some of these receptors are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the central nervous system, and CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system. Alger (2013) stated that the endocannabinoid system regulates different bodily functions. Some of these regulated functions include; sleep, mood, appetite, digestion, and memory. When anything seems off-balance in the body, the endocannabinoid system jumps in to ensure it is properly regulated.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

According to Cooray et al. (2020), CBD can support the functions of the endocannabinoid system. When a person consumes CBD, it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors like CB1 and CB2. It activates the two receptors and can also inhibit their reactions. This activation can be vital when the CB2 receptors are activated, and it can assist in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress inside the body. This can assist in minimizing the chances of the body cells being damaged and positively affect the cells' functions.

Homeostasis and CBD

The endocannabinoid system is known to be similar to CBD. However, using CBD can add some value to the body as it may assist in keeping the endocannabinoid system functioning properly. CBD can therefore boost the endocannabinoid system in regulating body functions.

Methods of Consuming CBD

There are different ways in which one can consume CBD. Some of these ways include;


Oils and tinctures are the ones that are taken sublingually. This involves placing the CBD oils and tinctures beneath the tongue so they can be absorbed. When they are beneath the tongue, one should wait a while before swallowing or spotting the oil. This is because you may lose the important ingredients in the tinctures. The mucous membrane absorbs the important ingredients of the CBD tinctures. It uses the capillaries, veins, and mucous membrane to send the CBD tinctures directly into the bloodstream. The great thing about this method is its effects are fast but short-lived simultaneously.


Some CBD topicals that can be used are lotions, creams, and balms. They are applied to the skin to feel its effects when interacting with the cannabinoid receptors. It does not get into the bloodstream, but the endocannabinoid receptors are the one that makes the effects felt through its cannabinoid receptors. Most people are into using CBD topical as it is less irritating.


The endocannabinoid system is the one that is in charge of regulating the different functions of the body. When consumed, CBD assists in interacting with the endocannabinoid system, thus bringing about homeostasis in the body. The interactions assist in optimizing the different body functions. More studies need to be carried out to discover the different ways the CBD can assist in bringing about homeostasis in the body.
